Optical Fibers are used to carry information over long distances because the loss of light through optical fibers is much lower than the loss of electricity through wires.
It would take about 500 tonnes of copper to lay 1,000km of coaxial cable, and just a few kilograms of quartz to switch to fibre-optic communications.
